APPLE REFUSES TO PAY US TAXES UNTIL TAX RATE IS “FAIR”

CEO Tim Cook Decides Apple Doesn’t Have to Pay Corporate Tax Rate Because It’s “Unfair”
The Intercept
by Jon Schwarz
Aug 16, 2016

WOULDN’T IT BE great if you could refuse to pay your taxes until you decided your tax rate was “fair”? That is, of course, not the way it works. Unless you’re Apple.

Apple is currently holding $181 billion overseas, largely thanks to arbitrarily deciding that its most valuable intellectual property seems to live exclusively in low tax countries. For instance, at one time Apple’s subsidiaries in Ireland — a country with 4.6 million people — “earned” over one-third of all Apple’s worldwide revenue.

U.S. corporations have by now stashed over $2.1 trillion in profits overseas (including Apple’s $181 billion), thereby starving the U.S. of revenue we could use to repair our collapsing infrastructure. What they want is for Americans to get so desperate that Congress is willing to deeply slash the corporate tax rate for “repatriated” money.

Puerto Rican Consumers will have to pay for PR's Electric Co. Mismanagement and Corruption Debt

PREPA wants for PR consumers to pay for the mismanagement and corruption which has created a crisis the PR Electric Company. These are local decisions and not from the Puerto Rico Fiscal Board, which has not been instituted yet.
In the meantime, Lisa Donahue's contract, (contracted by PREPA to restructure the debt) has been raised to a total of $43,600,000.00.
These are things that happen to US citizens in a neglected US Territory to which the US Congress has denied political power. MJ

"If allowed to proceed, the initial 22 percent rate increase would be one of the largest in recent US history to be imposed on a state-wide or territory-wide basis."Carlos Nieves, District Council 9 Painters & Allied Trades

Puerto Rican business groups file legal challenge to hike in electricity rates
August 19, 2016

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- A group of nine leading Puerto Rico industry and business associations are joining in an unprecedented legal challenge to a Puerto Rico Energy Commission (PREC) move to impose the first in a series of unlimited, "blank check" rate increases under the controversial debt-restructuring agreement for Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA).

If allowed to proceed, the initial 22 percent rate increase would be one of the largest in recent US history to be imposed on a state-wide or territory-wide basis. The June 2016 order by the Puerto Rico Energy Commission provided for a new surcharge to service the $9-billion PREPA debt restructuring. PREPA requested that the complete financial cost of the restructuring is passed to the Puerto Rico energy consumers plus an additional increase on the base rate.

Carlos Nieves, director of servicing, District Council 9 Painters & Allied Trades, said: "When we knew about the renewable energy surcharge and the related rates increases that will be imposed in Puerto Rico, equal to approximately 20 percent of their current rate, to back-up a $9 billion debt restructuring process of the power utility, we cannot give them our support and solidarity. Those kinds of things would not happen in the States. This seems to be an injustice being committed against 3.4 million of American citizens on the island."

The People of Puerto Rico Believe in Speaker Paul Ryan's PROMESA

Board Receives Greater Support after Approval
The results of The Survey show an increase in support to PROMESA and a decrease in the lack of awareness about it, although it still prevails

Thursday, August 18, 2016 - 6:00 AM
By El Nuevo Día

The subject of the Oversight Board, which is also known by the acronym of the federal law that enforces it (PROMESA), is still a topic about which more people are unaware than aware among registered voters, according to the results of the most recent edition of The Survey by El Nuevo Día.

Meanwhile, 6% of respondents say they have "a lot of knowledge," and another 19% say they have "some knowledge" about the Board. Three out of every four respondents claim the have "little knowledge" (55%) or "no knowledge" (20%).

When comparing these results with those obtained for "El Pulso del País" (another poll conducted byEl Nuevo Día last June,) the level of knowledge does show some increase, from 16% to 25%. However, just as it was back then, the lack of awareness prevails.
After answering the question about their knowledge of the imminent Oversight Board, all respondents were presented with explanatory material about it. After receiving this information, the level of knowledge on the subject among respondents increased to 81%, versus 69% reported in the survey conducted in June 2016.

It's interesting to note that 3 out of every 5 registered voters (62%) are in favor of PROMESA. This support prevails in all subgroups, including by gender, age, geographical area, education level, and annual household income.

By political affiliation, PROMESA has greater support among those who identify with the New Progressive Party (71%), but also among PDP affiliates (55%) and unaffiliated voters (58%).The opinion on the Oversight Board has shifted, compared to the results obtained in June, prior to its approval, when only 46% supported it, versus the current 62%.

In accordance with this increase in support of the Board, there's also an increase in the opinion that this measure is "very" or "quite" important for citizens, from 55% in June to 68% now.
Likewise, 3 out of every 5 people (61% of the 1,000 Survey respondents) feel the Board will be beneficial for the Island, which is a 14-point increase compared to the 47% who thought the same in the survey "Pulso del País" in June 2016.

INS Sources: Witnesses Will Point Directly at Perelló
By  on August 14, 2016

SAN JUAN – Several witnesses could point directly at House Speaker Jaime Perelló Borras in having knowledge of corruption perpetrated at the legislative body by other “co-conspirators” along with federal convict Anaudi Hernández Pérez, various sources told Inter News Service (INS).
Testimony sitting in the federal district attorney’s office could include Hernández Pérez confronting Perelló about the delay in granting a contract to his company, 3Comm, and the speaker’s reply to calm him: “The contract will be yours.”
The House had initiated a request for proposals (RFP), which ended up being false, to change the lower chamber’s switchboard.
Similarly, authorities have evidence that Perelló received an envelope with $45,000 in cash by Lutgardo Acevedo after a boat ride with Hernández Pérez along the Boquerón coast a few months before the 2012 election, in the midst of his political campaign.
Inside an SUV with tinted windows, where all three sat, Perelló, who says he does not know how much money was inside the envelope, according to what INS was told, would have handed the package to Hernández Pérez, who was responsible for carrying out fundraising events for the campaign of the then-Popular Democratic Party minority representative.

"The Center for a New Economy (CNE) is an independent, non-partisan think-tank that advocates for the development of a new economy for Puerto Rico. Founded in 1998, CNE produces rigorous public policy research and analysis, and is one of the most credible and influential voices on Puerto Rico’s economy. As a think tank, we are guided by the following values:
Miguel A. Soto-Class, President of CNE, introduced the discussion stressing that solutions to the Puerto Rico crisis need to have legitimacy within the island and seek to rebuild its fiscal institutions for the long-term.
Sergio Marxuach, Policy Director of CNE, discussed how a Fiscal Responsibility Law for Puerto Rico could be designed in order to deal with the current juncture and manage fiscal policy in the long-term; while Gordon Gray, Director of Fiscal Policy at the American Action Forum, cautioned about the challenges such a law would face in the context of Puerto Rico’s current politically charged atmosphere."
