Gutierrez would not have cut ties, if the Press had not brought this to light

WASHINGTON - Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., severed ties Thursday with a Chicago lobbyist that a USA TODAY investigation revealed he had paid more than $500,000 over the past 10 years to work in his congressional office.

Doug Scofield, a lobbyist and Gutierrez's former chief of staff, was hired in 2003 to train staff, review and help draft news releases and help "publicize programs and activities" of the congressman, USA TODAY reported last week.
